Getman wins discus and shot put, Consigli nabs boys’ discus championship
The Nipmuc track and field team saw two of its athletes capture state championships at the end of the spring season, as sophomore Kam Getman won both the shot put and discus crowns, while senior Eben Consigli defended his title in the discus.
For Getman, the younger of the two athletes, having the chance to train with teammates like Consigli at the top of their game has been a big boost.
“Practicing with them has always been really fun, they push each other and that makes everyone else want to push as well,” Getman said. “It’s very motivating to be on the team with people who are so excited for the sport and it shows you can do it as well, you just need to put in the same hard work.”
Getman was pleased with how the year progressed, especially setting a new record in the shot put despite having a preference for the discus.
For Consigli, capturing a second straight discus title was both exciting and a bit of a relief, especially because he fouled on his first two attempts during the preliminary round and needed to take a little off of his third throw to ensure that he posted a mark and was able to move onto the finals.
“You never want to foul out of a meet, especially one where you’re supposed to be defending the title, so I was definitely a little nervous,” he said. “But, once I made it to the finals, everything just went away, and I was able to pull through.”
Consigli went on to place fourth in both the Massachusetts Meet of Champions and the New England Regional meet. With his high school career wrapped up, Consigli will turn his attention to the University of New Hampshire, where he plans to compete in track at the Division I level.
“My sister went there, so I am familiar with the campus and I have competed against a couple of throwers who are there now,” he said. “It just felt very natural when I went on my visit.”
Getman advanced to the Meet of Champions in both events, and said that winning the state titles validated the effort that it took to get there.
“It was very rewarding and exciting,” Getman said.
With two years left, Consigli sees big things ahead for his now-former teammate.
“The things Kam has done are awesome, I wish I could have done that as a sophomore,” Consigli said. “The future is very bright, and they will continue to crush it wherever else they go.”
