Protecting a piece of Upton's history

The former Holy Angels Church building, located at 3 Milford St. in Upton, has fallen into a state of disrepair. According to the 2025 Criterium engineering report, the steeple is leaking and the roof should be repaired. While the Town continues discussions regarding a future use for the building, the Historical Commission has decided to submit an application to the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) requesting funding to repair the roof to prevent further deterioration.

The Commission's goal is to have these repairs completed before winter to safeguard the building against additional damage from heavy snow loads and strong winds.

In light of several recent Town Meeting votes, many Upton residents are understandably concerned about rising taxes. The good news is that CPC funding for this project will not increase the tax burden on Upton taxpayers. These funds have already been designated for historic preservation and exist specifically to protect important community assets such as this one. By using CPC funding, Upton can preserve a significant historic landmark in the heart of our town without placing any additional financial burden on its residents.

The former Holy Angels Church has stood proudly at the center of our community since 1848. Today, the building is 178 years old. As our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, it is fitting that our community also invests in preserving the places that tell Upton's own story. Repairing the roof is not simply a maintenance project—it is a commitment to safeguarding an irreplaceable part of our town's history for future generations.

Thank you.
