The Milford Historical Commission will hold a lawn gathering at the North Purchase District School, 261 Purchase Street, on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will be able to peek inside this 1832, one-room schoolhouse where a teacher taught nearby students grades 1-8.

District schools were established before neighborhood schools. They were maintained by families living in the district, now by town taxes. Teachers were usually ministers or spinsters.

Early photos, books, and historical maps will be available for viewing on the lawn, including pictures of the town, Main Street, the boot and shoe industry, and the granite industry.

Parking is available on Huckleberry Circle which is a short distance north of the schoolhouse.
